The thing I think sets 'the boys' apart from other great comedians is the relationship between Stan, Ollie and the camera (the audience).
There is an obvious camaradarie between Stan and Ollie, even though Stan exasperates Ollie and they spend so much time fighting...much like brothers! And when Stan's behaviour becomes so bizarre Ollie delivers one of those 'can-you-believe-what-we-are-seeing?'-stares at the camera, thus involving the audience.
Above all others they make that jump from the silent to the sound era and in fact harnessed the power of sound to create additional gags that would not have worked without it...like 'hornophobia'.
In short they married successfully the genius of the silent era with the power of sound to create comic masterpieces!
Does anyone have other views as to what made them more special than the other great comedians of the day?

It's about putting our brains together so that we can forge ahead. After all, if we didn't have to work hard any more we could buy a couple of fishpoles, have our chins scraped, buy the Brooklyn Bridge and retire to the County Hospital for some well earned fish and chips, some hard-boiled eggs and some nuts.
By the way, how much do you want for that clock?
